It’s been a while since I shared an Instagram-ish update, mostly because that used to be a weekend thing… and there’s not much difference now between my weekdays and weekends. 2 Exceptions: The number of adults present (a.k.a. persons capable of rational thought + behavior, most of the time) in the home during the day — There are twice as many of these on the weekends. The number of leotards worn to gymnastics class– That number is 1 during the week. And 0 on the weekends. (… please note that I did not simply say the number of leotards worn). I love a good ill-informed, politically charged Facebook post from a middle school friend happy life update from an old pal as much as the next person. And as you’ll see from my Twitter “likes,” I can’t get enough tweets about the Pope. Or preserving tomatoes. Or Jeopardy! contestants’ opinions of Alex Trebec. And don’t get me started on Pinterest. It’s the best way to waste time, while pretending that it’s going to help you me more productive in the future. If only I’d remember I pinned that workout for slim and trim hips. Or a month’s worth of dinners in 2 hours flat! But Instagram is my favorite. While I aim to keep things light-ish and bright-ish, these are still very real moments. Ones that I want to share, but mostly ones I want to remember. Here’s a bit of a scoop on the last week’s posts. THE WEEK ACCORDING TO INSTAGRAM | @ELIZABETHEV It’s rare for Nick to fall asleep in my arms any more, but he seems to get extra cozy in his new ring sling. We upgraded from the linen sling to silk, which feels much more snug for my toddler-sized infant. I took this selfie (us-ie?) after we finished watering my parents’ plants when then you were away. Pretend gardening is tiring work apparently. Quinoa and pesto had been a late summer standby. And you already know how I feel about heirloom tomatoes and mozzarella. The spicy micro greens are from Whole Foods and make a nice addition to this warm salad. (You could eat it cold, obviously… but that would require patience. And they were sold out of that.) These are my new shoes. The ones my husband bought for himself, and then I copied him and ordered a pair. So, that’s special. I’ve mentioned the On Being podcast before, but I sort of feel like I’m going to keep talking about it until everyone is listening. What do shoes have to do with a podcast? A recent episode that aired during the Olympics featured a group of runners sharing how running is a spiritual practice for them. I was listening in the car on the way to Mama Beasts and, as soon as I grabbed a parking spot, grabbed my phone to jot some quick notes from the episode. “The blessing is outside your comfort zone” is something someone said to Ashley Hicks, co-founder of Black Girls Run, as she was prepping for the Chicago Marathon. I thought that was pretty powerful. I also found myself wanting to learn anything and everything about Billy Mills, the first (and only, so far) American to win Olympic gold in the 10,000 meter race. His interview was really compelling, too. Such a good episode. These two are the cutest. I love how gentle and playful Clark is with both kids. The old guy has seen better days, health-wise, so I’m feeling extra mushy about him lately. We are so lucky to have him at our sides. We’ve been spending a lot of time out at the island lately– running, walking, counting boats, learning about fishing (Grace has taken a particular interest, which grosses me out, but hey), playing on the “big kid” swings, and looking for seagulls. Oh and marveling that people are still playing Pokemon Go. Apparently Castle Island is a hot bed of pokemon activity (I don’t really know what that means, but I heard it somewhere… so it must be true). But seriously. I would eat snacks for every meal. I love everything about seeded eucalyptus — the color, the varied textures, the incredible fragrance. I always pick up a bunch when it’s in stores. Same goes for new issues of domino. …and the full view of the tiny Instax shot included in the photo above. Nick and I were down the Cape for a quick half-day trip (we’ve got something really fun in the works) and I couldn’t resist a quick stop at the beach. It was quiet, overcast and a bit chilly– perfect off-season weather. And last, but not least, confetti from the best date night ever with Nick, seeing Adele live at the Garden (I forget what the real/new/current name of that place is). The show was incredible, and I couldn’t help but grab a few pieces of confetti (each piece had a lyric or note in her handwriting… but despite what people were claiming, I don’t think she hand wrote all 9 million pieces… or whatever). She performed for just over 2 hours, I think, with no breaks and no opening act. I loved the format– especially the short acoustic set in the middle. I have been listening to “Don’t You Remember” and “When We Were Young” and “Hometown Glory” on repeat. Semi related: Lemon water with a bit of honey is great for your throat… you know, if you’ve been walking around your condo pretending you can sing and sort of lost your voice. Also On Tap for Today: 5 things that people don’t do enough (but should!) from Apartment Therapy Wishing we could trade pumpkin-everything season for an extra long peppermint-everything season Stop spending so much time in your head from Medium What’s your favorite social media platform? If you could be any diva (current or past) who would you be?

For the first time since living in South Boston, we didn’t head out to watch the parade. Instead, I was being that mom at the pediatrician’s office. We got a contagious illness report from daycare this week (the dreaded conjunctivitis is going around), so when Grace started rubbing her eyes, I started becoming a nutcase. A word of advice: Don’t Google “pink eye” at three in the morning. The nurse I spoke with this morning encouraged us to come in today, just in case. By the time 2 o’clock rolled around, I started to wonder if it was more likely Grace had accidentally squirted yogurt into her own eye, or that part of her bagel got in there or something. Needless to say: no conjunctivitis. I love our pediatrician, though (and the fact that they’ll see us on Sundays). We had no trouble getting out of Southie, but heading back in during the parade proved to be a bit more challenging. One of the (presumably many) upsides to not being infected and being out and about? We had a little impromptu visit with my sister and brother-in-law during which Grace tried to eat a crayon and I learned that Selection Saturday is actually Selection Sunday. And I wonder why people don’t invite me to join their March Madness pools. Oh but before I say anything else, sorry for talking about pink eye. I promise we did non-gross things this weekend too. Like the things pictured below. The Weekend According to Instagram 32 First things first: The snow is melting… AND THINGS ARE GROWING. I spotted these little sprouts alongside our driveway on Sunday afternoon and literally shrieked in delight. I immediately emailed a photo to my husband and our neighbors. And I’m now taking bets on who thinks I’m crazier, our neighbors or Grace’s pediatrician. This weekend was great for my personal brand. Whatever that means. Our neighborhood is ready for St. Patrick’s Day. I don’t want to live any where else. Most of the time. A little weekend doodling. Watercolor + pen + birds. I am obsessed with the artwork on these seed packets from the Hudson Valley Seed Library. I am kicking myself for not buying their calendar at the Flower Show. Aaaand another photo from this year’s Boston Flower and Garden Show. Nick and I always talk about living in a tiny house one day, and I think I found the one this weekend. Technically, I think this is more of a garden shed, but I am pretty sure there’s room for Grace and Clark’s imaginary bunkbeds. And if I take after my maternal grandfather at all (which I hope I do), I’m only going to get shorter so…. I think it will work. After the Flower Show, we ducked out of the rain and grabbed tacos across the street at Rosa Mexicana. Aren’t my lunch dates adorable? I started Saturday morning with a big cup of organic peppermint amour and some to do list-ing. Of the 900 things on the list for the weekend, I think I accomplished 3. One of those things was “make a to do list.” Can’t win ’em all. A peek at my art journal (you’ll find more pages here and here). Did anyone else read Richard Scarry books as a kid? They were a family favorite of ours. I ordered a copy of Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever for Grace and seriously… it’s the best word book ever. Not surprisingly, her favorite page is the one where the bear gets dressed. She is all about her shoes these days. Also On Tap for Today: There’s still time to sign up for the HLB tea swap! Looking forward to Whole Foods Market Beauty Week and picking up a Hello, Beauty bag Completely sucked into Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt How was your Selection Sunday weekend?

It’s been a hundred years several months since I shared a Weekend According to Instagram update. Mostly because I was trying to learn Roman numerals and figure out what came after XXV. Just kidding. Or am I? Regardless, we really packed quite a bit of fun into the past two days. I wish every day was a summer weekend day. Except, like, Christmas. Obviously. The Weekend According to Instagram XXVI After Nick got home from CrossFit and I finished a little yoga on the deck and a walk with my lovely friend Alyson, we headed down to my parents’ house for some pool time. Grace is still too young to wear sunblock (though our pediatrician did say we could test a tiny patch on her arm, she emphasized that our best bet is keeping her out of the sun altogether), so we broke out her ridiculous sun hat and rash guard for quick dip. She seemed a bit shocked at first and was clearly holding on for deal life, but I have a feeling we’ve got a water baby on our hands. We spent lots of time outside this weekend, including a little Sunday evening stroll around the neighborhood with the Frenchie. Earlier in the day, Grace and I met up with our mom/baby friends and JP and then picked up Nick for our baptism prep class and some lunch in the Back Bay. There is more Black Mass filming being done in our neighborhood this week. On one hand, it’s rather exciting to have Johnny Depp walking around, but on the other, it was a pretty unnerving to see signs about forced busing at the old Southie High last night. Sure, the fresh paint on the street is part of a movie set, but the busing crisis was a real and critical time in the city and neighborhood’s history, one with powerful and lasting effects. On a lighter (only 100 calories and not the least bit depressing) note: I am going to eat 600 Yasso frozen Greek yogurt bars this summer. 2 down, 598 to go. I received a coupon for a free box a few weeks ago and highly recommend the sea salt caramel flavor (we’re already onto our second box), best enjoyed with your feet up on the deck. Oh, and save your popsicle sticks. I’ve got an easy DIY project coming up later this week. Nick and I had our first date night (5 months in the making!) since becoming parents. Mom on the loose! We were able to get last minute tickets to Amaluna and my sister and brother-in-law generously offered to babysit. It was really nice to get out for a bit, especially knowing Grace (and Clark) were in such good hands. The pictures my sister took of Zach and Grace together basically melted my heart. Uncle Z is the coolest. We were home before dark (and I nearly fell asleep during intermission — I need to step up my game if I want to convince Nick to go on a second post-baby date anytime soon), just in time to catch this beautiful sunset over the city. I already want this summer to last forever. Also On Tap for Today: After watching Tiny, I’ve become obsessed with the idea of moving into a tiny house… maybe, like… in 20 years If you have a lot of free time on your hands before the 4th, make these and impress your friends. 10 easy DIYs for the 4th via Buzzfeed (Red, white and blue jorts for everyone!) What was the highlight of your weekend?

We had quite the lovely weekend. We started with an exciting doctor’s appointment, followed with lots of time spent with family and friends, and ended with paying attention to football a nap on the sofa. The weekend according to Instagram XIX You likely already saw the news (mostly because I can’t keep anything good and exciting to myself), but Nick and I found out Friday afternoon that we are expecting a girl. And I am expecting her to have her father wrapped around her little finger. Clark is excited because (among other reasons) they’ll be able to share clothes. He loves ruffles. I found this little guy beneath our stoop early Saturday, just as the rain was clearing. I like when nature visits the city. And isn’t that shell gorgeous? I whipped up two batches of this easy, football-friendly black bean dip this weekend. You can find the vegan, gluten-free recipe (along with a tour of our new kitchen) here. (And thank you, Emily, for catching the #2 pun…) We spent Friday night laughing, eating, and more laughing with friends. Our new place is really feeling like home, especially with friends and family there to share the space. Matt and Pam brought us this cheery pink begonia plant. I have a feeling there’s going to be more and more pink coming our way. I don’t know if I should tell you this or not… so naturally, I am going to tell you. Clark got peed on by another dog this weekend. He was standing on one side of a chain link fence, and the perp was on the other, attempting to mark the fence post (presumably). Instead, he decorated my dog (who seemed oddly oblivious to the whole thing). Next stop: the longest, most thorough bath of Clark’s life. We enjoyed this gorgeous view of the city from my sister and brother-in-law’s new apartment on Saturday night. I love having our family just minutes away. The next day, we had dinner with my brother, sister-in-law and niece. We’re spoiled. Who ever said you don’t win friends with salad has never eaten salad with me. I love making a big salad to enjoy on Sunday night, with enough to pack for lunch on Monday. Because I am both lazy and a forward thinker. It wouldn’t be the end of the weekend without a polish change. I went from dark (essie no more film) to light (essie pilates hottie). Meanwhile, at the other end of the sofa, Clark was down for the count. That’s what a weekend of fun with do to a Frenchie.

The bad news: It’s September. The good news: It’s Tuesday. I spent much of Labor Day Weekend laboring at our new condo, unpacking boxes and making poorly timed visits to Target during move-in weekend in Boston. There was still plenty of time for long walks with Nick and Clark, visits with family, baking, bubble baths and juice on the deck. The weekend according to Instagram XVIII Athleta sent me a generous gift card in celebration of National Yoga Month (more on that this week), so I stopped by their Newbury Street store with my sister and found the coziest, most comfortable pullover. I live for thumbholes. While unpacking, I came across a box of festive umbrella straws. They were in the same box as my Mexican flag toothpicks and an exploded jar of margarita salt. Who knows. The straw added a little late summer flair to Saturday’s juice. Special delivery, just in time for Healthy Living Summit: new last name –> new social media cards from MOO. Nick’s parents came down for lunch on Sunday. While he grilled up a bunch of vegetables, steak and chicken, I went to work on appetizers, a green salad with a lemon vinaigrette, orzo salad, and a big bowl of fruit. Clark helped by eating his body weight in watermelon. I love having more room to entertain. Almost as much as Nick loves having his own grill right off the kitchen. I’d been itching to bake since we moved in last week and had great luck with this recipe for banana muffins. I made a few changes, swapping the flour for a mix of almond meal and gluten free baking mix, cutting the sugar in half and adding a heaping teaspoon of cinnamon. They were perfectly baked after 20 minutes… and lasted almost that long on our counter before being gobbled up. What better way to wind down a day than a hot bath? I can’t wait to share photos of the rest of our condo soon, but this giant soaking tub in the master bath is definitely a highlight. I used a lavender and vanilla bath bomb from the Whole Body section at Whole Foods and soaked until my finger tips wrinkled. Have you seen the Self Care for September Challenge that Kristi and Erin hosting? They’ve teamed up to create a month-long campaign filled with daily challenges to help encourage and inspire us all to develop our own self-care practices. One of the suggestions on their list, which happens to be a favorite of mine? Bring home fresh flowers for yourself. Other suggestions include journaling, meditation, and…. bubble baths. Clark makes a lovely pillow. Nick and I hadn’t been to the movies in the theater ages, and while I love the actual movie-viewing part, I sort of hate the movie theater part. The sticky floors, people gabbing away on their cellphones, and the risk of my elbow getting touched by a stranger’s elbow are enough to compel me to wait for a movie to hit Netflix. I really wanted to see The Butler, though, so I checked out our options and landed on the Showcase SuperLux in Chestnut Hill. The tickets were pricey, but I am glad I splashed out a little because Lord, have mercy… we may never go to a regular theater again. We sat in the “superlux” section and enjoyed fully reclining leather seats, food and beverage service throughout the movie and complimentary popcorn. The only thing that would have made the experience better: a bottomless supply of tissues. I’d like to blame the pregnancy hormones, but if you’ve ever witnessed me reading a Jonathan Kozol book for the fourteenth time, you know once I start crying I don’t stop. Awkward sobbing aside, the movie was really, really great.

The weekend according to Instagram XVIII

Athleta sent me a generous gift card in celebration of National Yoga Month (more on that this week), so I stopped by their Newbury Street store with my sister and found the coziest, most comfortable pullover.

Hello, Monday Tuesday. It’s going to be one of those weeks, isn’t it? The weekend according to Instagram IX Nick and I kicked the weekend off in lovely fashion on Friday night, thanks to the Boston Ballet. The Ballet generously offered me a pair of tickets to the opening night of Sleeping Beauty. And beautiful it was. I highly recommend making it to this show (and grabbing a glass of Champagne on the way in). The dancers are incredible, the costumes are fabulous, and the music is divine. My sister and I headed to the Cape on Saturday morning with our parents. Andrea’s wedding is just two months away (beyond excited), and I got to tag along for her hair trial and a meeting with her florist. We also swung by a couple of our favorite beaches. It’s incredible how this winter’s storms have entirely shifted the shoreline in some places. I love Sunday mornings at CrossFit Southie. The classes are always small, and I get to spend the rest of the day limping around. Just kidding… kind of. For the strength portion of our workout, we were working up to our max reps of bench presses at either 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 of our body weight, or at our body weight for prescribed. I got 2 reps just under 1/2 my body weight, and 20 reps at 1/4. (Sometimes I think I should carry a calculator around the gym.) I was working with two women who are stronger than me, which I always find intimidating, but they encouraged me to keep adding weight and pushing it just a bit more. New favorite app: Percolator. It’s much more entertaining in color. While I pretended to get stuff done around the condo (but mostly just followed Clark around and Percolated him), Nick got the grocery shopping done at Whole Foods River Street. What a man. We didn’t have a hospital visit scheduled this week, so Clark took his magical therapy powers (and matching vest) to the college kids. We spent two hours in a senior dorm at Bentley, just doin’ what we do (i.e. I hold the leash, Clark snuggles with strangers). It wouldn’t be a weekend without a Polar FT4 shot. And it wouldn’t be spring in Boston without… Christmas lights? If I had my way, the Commonwealth Mall would look like this year round. Also On Tap for Today: First soccer game of the new season (I am terrified) Love this: Decorating with Herbs Adding #fmsphotoaday prompts to my April (gasp!) calendar What is your favorite photo app?

Goodbye, weekend. Hello, Monday. (That sounds like the title of a very emo song.) For the first time in ages a few weeks, there was no storm to contend with in Boston this weekend. I just remembered a saying: Only boring people talk about the weather. As evidence that I am not entirely boring (just mostly boring), I give you: The weekend according to Instagram VI. I rounded out my birthday and kicked off the weekend with a 60 minute massage at the newly opened Bodywaves Therapeutic Massage, in the North End. I had originally made the appointment for three weeks ago, but it got snowed out (there I go again, me and the weather). I reschedule it for a week ago, and then remembered that I had stitches. On my back. Where I wanted to be massaged. I rescheduled again, grabbing the first Friday evening appointment they had. It could not have come at a better time. To say I am feeling a bit stressed lately would be an understatement. To say I would like to hole up in my condo with a limitless supply of Cheese Doodles (and without contact with the outside world) would not be an understatement. Regardless, the massage was perfect. Between Haymarket and the local bars, the area is bustling, but I almost prefer that to the absolute quiet of some spas. After finishing up, my massage therapist gave me some great stretches for opening up my chest and counteracting all the slouching over my desk I seem to be doing. Bonus: the prices are really reasonable. I will definitely be back. Nick gave me this awesome Frenchie umbrella from The San Francisco Umbrella Company. As with most things that come into our home, Clark assumed this was for him. I am likely to blame for this. I cannot put this book down. Mindy Kaling is my spirit animal. Ever the mature grown-up, I spent Saturday at the office. At least my mouse pad is pretty. And I have a ball of elastics. Sunday burn. Self-explanatory (not that the other eight photos aren’t…). While out and about I felt compelled to snap this shot. It just seemed so quintessentially New England. Nick and I did an especially gigantic grocery shopping this weekend. You know those weeks when you seem to be out of everything? I stocked up on lots of fresh produce, lentils, almond milk, tea, and rice noodles. After unpacking the goods, I prepped as many meals as I could for the week ahead, including a roasted sweet potato salad with celery, red and green onions, dried currants and bell peppers. So good. Trust me. I love my crossfit log from Journal Menu. They have a bunch of pre-made designs, but I wanted to make use of one of my popsicolor creations, so I uploaded my own design. I love being able to log and track benchmarks and progress. This big vase of Queen Anne’s Lace reminds me so much of the Cape. I love its organic, willowy shape. The USDA, on the other hand, finds it to be a “noxious weed.” (This, according to wikipedia, obviously.) We can’t all have impeccable taste. Also On Tap for Today: Teaching my dog how to do this Taking my brain for a relaxing run Enjoying my own indoor garden What was the highlight of your weekend?

Happy Presidents’ Day, my fellow commoners. I am currently enjoying both a long weekend and a short glass of chocolate almond milk. Wondering what else I’ve been up to? The weekend according to Instagram IV This is a picture of a picture (weird, I know) from 1982. My older brother’s 2nd birthday happened to fall on Easter, and the world’s cutest grandpa made him a snow bunny in the backyard to celebrate. [Meanwhile, I was five weeks old and likely crying.] Both sets of our grandparents always made the holidays so special for us. I miss them and love seeing photos like this when I go home. While Nick was at CrossFit this weekend (no big deal, but I had to have teeny tiny surgery and am not allowed to hit up CrossFit Southie until the stitches come out… hence no WOD instagrams this weekend), I reorganized our baking/supplements cabinet. And broke out the neon washi. Naturally. Normally I’d refrigerate nuts (keeps ’em fresh… and, um… fresh nuts are a good thing…), but these ones are being used early in the week. If you live in Southie, or read The New York Times from cover to cover on December 29, 2010, you know these are no ordinary jugs. These are space savers. When Nick, Tina, Mal and I headed out for dinner on Saturday night, I found a primo parking spot, previously cleared of snow and “saved” with two water jugs connected by blue ribbon (well done, I must say). I know better than to move someone’s savers (let’s be serious), but someone before me tossed them to the sidewalk. I parked at my own peril, but not before asking if I should a. try to be sneaky and move the jugs to another spot or b. write a note explaining that I did not move the jugs. Nick’s advice? “Don’t touch the jugs.” We hit up the Lincoln Tavern for an early dinner and lots of laughs (mostly about jugs). The food is great, and the space itself is pretty incredible. Especially when you consider that it used to be a Payless. I love that they exposed the original tin ceiling and brick walls. I ordered the chopped salad (no bacon, no eggs, no croutons… just the lettuce, bleu cheese and high maintenance) and a side of mashed potatoes. Oh, and a glass of Prosecco. Saucony sent me a pair of their new Virrata running shoes. They are beyond. I can’t wait to give you the full scoop. You know that I am weather obsessed. This time of year, I delight in finding the first sign of spring. Just before the weekend’s snow storm, Clark and I happened upon a soon-to-be crocus, peeking out from the ground. It’s the little things. You also know that I am Frenchie obsessed. On a recent trip to Target, I cut through the children’s bedding aisle (at least I think that’s what that was) on my way to the Diet Coke aisle and happened upon this ceramic Frenchie bank. We’ve been sticking our loose change in various jars and vases, but feeding a little bulldog quarters seems so much more satisfying. And cute. I met Michelle for afternoon tea on Sunday at the Boston Harbor Hotel. We shared a table by the water, a tower of treats, and two hours of non-stop chatter. I chose a pot of peppermint tea and devoured a (non-gluten free… can’t win ’em all) lemon poppyseed scone and a few bites of flourless chocolate cake. It was such a lovely way to spend a snowy afternoon. Thankful to have today off, Clark and spent the morning at the hospital, making therapy dog visits with our favorite kids. I can think of few better ways to start the week.
