Maybe? Minus the being rude part? [Image source] Regardless of the fact that the Olympics have kept me up late (which reminds me, I need to delete the NBC Olympics app. It’s the ultimate spoil sport.), they provide no shortage of inspiration. And I’m not just talking about the Olympians’ physiques, though, um… two words: beach volleyball. The people, the stories, inside those bodies is what really gets me. (If that sounded creepy, this was not my intention.) I don’t know about you, but that VISA commercial featuring US track athlete Lopez Lamong has me welling up every, single time. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwZ2n0kURuY?rel=0&w=640&h=360] I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about running, mostly because I’ve spent a lot of time… well… running over the past few years. In the weeks after the 2011 New York City Marathon, as I pathetically limped from here to there, unable to get out for a run, I was reminded that– for me– running is a luxury. It’s a privilege. It’s something I do because I have free time, safe streets, comfortable sneaks, and someone to look after my dog. When have I ever run out of true necessity? When have I ever run to survive? If you’re interested in learning more about the so-called “Lost Boys of Sudan,” I highly recommend reading God Grew Tired of Us (A Memoir), by John Bul Dau with Michael S. Sweeney. Have tissues at the ready. It’s crushing and uplifting all at once. There are so many other inspiring stories to come out of the Olympics, a few favorites: Hamadou Djibo Issaka, the rower from Niger, who started rowing just three months ago Oscar Pistorius is the first amputee to compete in the Olympics Boxer Claressa Shields overcomes significant odds to win Olympic gold Manteo Mitchell finishes his relay leg despite having… a broken leg One of my favorite images, so far, though has been one of sheer joy. Certainly something worth staying up late for. [Image source] Yes, Robert Harting. Yes, yes, yes. I was lucky enough to be a spectator and am still in awe of what he accomplished. I honestly felt like I was watching the Olympics, except that we were in Marlboro. And at one point an ambulance meandered onto the bike course and nearly ran over several competitors, and then a man crossed that same portion of the course, dragging a canoe behind him. I am pretty sure that isn’t allowed at the Olympics.

I was forbidden to take Spandex photos.

...but I did anyway.

Guy Smiley, cruisin' to the finish line!

It really was an amazing feat to witness. Canada hockey game approaches. Consequently, liquor stores will be closing four hours early. Have no fear, the paper beers are freely flowing at On Tap for Today. While I will be rooting for the US (obvi), I’ve got nothing but love (and Barney Butter) for you, Canada. Jaime, genius that she is, kicked off the first cross border exchange in the fall. She had me at ketchup chips (and Nick at Mr. Big Bars). Jessica and I had fun with another exchange in January. The lovely Melanie at Running to Health graciously offered to send goodies from Nova Scotia, and I am so glad she did! Check out what arrived on Friday: I tore into this package with delight! Melanie included Best Health Magazine, which is only available in Canada, much to my dismay. It’s chock full of great ideas and articles and is sort of Body + Soul meets Self, meets the person at your office who gives the best advice. I’ll be sure to share some tips from the magazine this week. The ketchup chips did not last long. I may have eaten them for dinner on Friday. Whoops. And what’s a hearty, well-balanced meal without dessert? These maple syrup treats are delicious. They reminded me of our high school French immersion trip to Quebec in the best possible way [Side bar: ask my brother about my claim that there was a dead penguin trapped in a frozen St. Lawrence River. I swear to this day, it was there]. We visited a maple syrup lodge in the middle of nowhere and ate syrup that had been hardened in troughs of snow. These treats from Melanie were delicious and no penguins (real or imaginary) were harmed in the process. I’m excited to try out the granola Melanie picked up at her local farmers’ market (perhaps it will be mixed into tomorrow’s yogurt?) and the box of tea she included. You know I love a good cup of tea. I’m as determined as ever to hunt down some American Smarties so we can discuss why the heck Canadian and American Smarties are so different. Stay tuned for more on that very important matter. Thank you, Melanie! If anyone else is interested in joining the package exchange fun, let me know. 🙂 The Miracle on Ice bonanza has wrapped up and the game is underway, so I will leave you with my latest cupcake creation. I’m having fun with fondant. And, as usual, I need to get a life. Those are supposed to be Olympic rings, not fruit loops. Yep… I hope you enjoyed a lovely weekend. Go U.S.A. (…and Canada)!
