There are so many perks to living in New England and I swear we earn every single one of them by surviving grey, grouchy winters and what’s likely a universal vitamin D deficiency. At the top of that list of perks for me is a Dunks on every corner proximity to places like the Cape and Islands (we’ve got the mountains and valleys, too — but you know I’m partial to the coast). Whether you’re living here or passing through, day trips to the Cape, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard are kind of a must, if you ask me. Looking for a little inspiration? Here’s my itinerary for the perfect Nantucket day trip: Traveling to and from Nantucket We have a few great options for getting to and from the island of Nantucket, and while I’m sure flying is perfectly lovely, I’m partial to the ferries, which dock right downtown — ideal for a day trip to the island. The length and speed of your voyage will depend on where you’re departing from, of course. Regardless of which boat you’re taking, don’t forget to go out on the deck as you approach Nantucket to get the best view of Brant Point lighthouse. What to do on your perfect Nantucket day trip The ferries all dock right downtown, so you won’t have to go far to enjoy the charm of the island. I love strolling the brick and cobblestone streets, popping into shops and snapping photos of the incredible landscaping architecture and stunning window boxes along the way. I could (and have!) spent an entire day just strolling… so be sure to leave plenty of time in your schedule for exploring. Nantucket has public restrooms located downtown at 25 Federal Street (backside of the visitors center) and 25 Commercial Street. Both locations are clean, well-maintained, and clearly marked. There are also restrooms located inside the Hy-Line offices adjacent to the dock. A few of my favorite shops: Walk or bike to the Brant Point Lighthouse: This picturesque cutie of a lighthouse (the shortest in New England, apparently) is located at the end of Easton Street and the grounds are open year-round. It’s the perfect spot to watch the tides change and ferry boats pass. *Please note that there is no parking at the lighthouse, nor are the grounds especially accessible. Reaching the lighthouse requires an approximately 1/10 mile walk across sand. Visit the Nantucket Whaling Museum at 13 Broad Street: The Whaling Museum features both permanent and special exhibits and covers four centuries of island history. Be sure to visit the museum’s roof deck for an unmatched view of the harbor and neighboring streets. Cool off at Children’s Beach: Grab a lemonade or waffle cone at Juice Bar and make your way to Children’s Beach to cool off. The beach has a small playground, public restrooms, picnic tables, and very calm waters. Cruise Nantucket harbor: Enjoy the island from a different vantage point! There are number of charter companies operating out of Nantucket harbor, but I absolutely love the charm of Nantucket By Water’s Minke, a 26′ Classic Crosby Launch with a full canopy top, in particular. Admire the homes along Old North Wharf: You’ll likely recognize the endlessly instagrammed Constitution, Mary F. Slade, Wharf Rat Club and the other charming homes along Old North Wharf. They’re especially charming when the climbing roses and hydrangea are in bloom, but they’re worth a visit year-round. (Don’t be a creep, though, obv — these are private homes.) Grab lunch at Provisions: Do I daydream about Provisions’ sandwiches on cold, dreary days? Yes. Have I grabbed an extra Caprese sandwich for the ferry ride home? Also, yes. It’s often busy, so I recommend avoiding peak times or simply enjoying the people watching outside by the Gazebo while you wait for your order. Provisions is located at 3 Harbor Square. Seriously, though. Get the second sandwich. Also On Tap for Today: Where would you head to for your perfect day trip?

They provide year-round service, with upwards of 9 departure times during the summer. They own a large parking lot directly across from the ferry terminal (cash only — they do not accept cards, I am pretty sure the max fee is $28 during the peak of summer… which is great, because that’s exactly how much cash I cobbled together on my last trip over after forgetting to stop at the ATM ), as well as a satellite lot with shuttle service, located a mile away.

From Harwich (lower Cape): The Freedom Ferry travels from Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich Port to Nantucket in 80 minutes. Parking is free for daytrippers (there is also overnight parking available).

From New Bedford, MA or New York City or Highlands, NJ: The high-speed Seastreak catamaran sails directly to Nantucket from New Bedford, and stops in Oaks Bluff, Martha’s Vineyard en route to Nantucket from NY and NJ. One major perk to the Seastreak is their dockside valet parking (I’ve sailed with them from New Bedford to MVY and was so impressed with this option).

Admire the homes along Old North Wharf: You’ll likely recognize the endlessly instagrammed Constitution, Mary F.

This past Saturday was kind of a dream. There were bantam chickens running around, the Grateful Dead was playing, and I was surrounded by the most kind, spirited and smart women.

We spent roughly 7 hours in Kennebunkport, Maine, and it was just… the best.

Shauna organized a really lovely day trip for a group of us, and the highlight was definitely a weaving workshop (and the aforementioned chickens) with her friend Kerin, who owns Cape Porpoise Trading Co. in Kennebunkport.

Kerin welcomed us to her home/studio, where she taught us how to make one of her gorgeous recycled lobster rope doormats and set us up on two outdoor looms so we could make our own.

I kind of love how mine turned out (mine obviously has some, shall we say, character… but the mats Kerin weaves are flawless)! And it was really fun to make– you know I dig creative time, but it’s even better when shared with friends. I brought my mat to the Cape with me Saturday night (I drove straight from Kennebunkport to Harwich… except that I stopped for ice cream… but yes)– it looks just perfect outside our deck door.

Kerin makes each mat to order (I have my eye on this one) and she has the most adorable lobster rope ornaments for sale too. I loved seeing her studio and learning about her process — it was such a special morning.

Cape Porpoise Trading Co. recycled lobster mats are available online + in select stores across the country.

Our next stop was The Boathouse for lunch (the restaurant kindly provided complimentary appetizers + desserts). I had few bites of edamame, and ordered the fresh farm salad (it was perfect) and a side of fries (I eat like a toddler) for my meal. The food was great, as was the service– and the waterfront location and decor were just perfect. We shared lots of laughs over lunch before making a quick shopping stop over the bridge.

The Boathouse Waterfront Hotel + Restaurant is located at 21 Ocean Avenue in Kennebunkport, Maine.

We stopped at The Best of Everything in Kennebunkport (they have Florida locations as well and offered us each a gift card)– I picked out an adorable fall outfit for Grace and Corksicle tumbler for Nick (…sorry Nicky). The salespeople could not have been nicer, and the store was full of great gift options.

After finishing up with our shopping, we drove about 20 minutes north to Biddeford, Maine to visit with Sarah and Leah, co-founders of Salty Girl Beauty. I had the chance to chat with Sarah and Leah at a past WELL Summit event and have loved following their success as they launched their own line of natural, organic products. Their personal stories and charitable work with the breast cancer community resonate strongly with my family, and I’m just amazed by their grace and grit. Special thanks to Amanda for setting up this visit!

I’m excited to try out some of their new products (their lavender bath salts + multi stick), but in the meantime, I wanted to be sure to share an upcoming event that Leah and Sarah have created, along with journalist Caitlin Kiernan and Violets Are Blue Skincare Company founder Cynthia Besteman.

The Cancer Wellness Expo

The Cancer Wellness Expo is a one-day intimate conference featuring inspirational speakers, experts and influencers who will address the unique issues women with cancer face through honest, provocative and positive conversations.
You can shop + learn more about Salty Girl Beauty and their Foundation4Love charity by visiting their website.

The ride from Boston was under two hours (I stopped at Nubble Light– can’t resist a lighthouse), and definitely do-able for a day trip (though there are plenty of adorable inns + hotels in the area). I’d love to make it up again soon, but in the meantime, you can catch me snacking on Maine blueberries + admiring our new lobster rope mat.

Also On Tap for Today:

Starting to plan a few DIY holiday gifts (this body scrub looks legit)

Family walk at the Cape

Getting a jump on meal planning for the week ahead

What is your favorite day trip location?

When we closed on our beach house last fall, I was longing for summer. I looked forward to long days at the beach, warm evenings on the deck, and starry nights with our family. While I know this coming summer will be wonderful, I can’t tell you how much joy and peace winter on Cape Cod has brought us. It has been the best surprise. We’ve spent nearly every weekend down the Cape since October, escaping the busy-ness of our (equally wonderful, albeit noisier) lives in the city. There is something so calm and lovely about the off season. WINTER ON CAPE COD Calm and lovely, indeed. …And there’s plenty of beach parking. Also On Tap for Today: Breathing meditation 101 from Hack Spirit Decor inspiration: Zelda’s Modern Day Beach Cottage from Cottage and Vine So looking forward to this weekend’s Day of WELLness! What’s your favorite local escape?
