It’s been a hundred years several months since I shared a Weekend According to Instagram update. Mostly because I was trying to learn Roman numerals and figure out what came after XXV. Just kidding. Or am I? Regardless, we really packed quite a bit of fun into the past two days. I wish every day was a summer weekend day. Except, like, Christmas. Obviously. The Weekend According to Instagram XXVI After Nick got home from CrossFit and I finished a little yoga on the deck and a walk with my lovely friend Alyson, we headed down to my parents’ house for some pool time. Grace is still too young to wear sunblock (though our pediatrician did say we could test a tiny patch on her arm, she emphasized that our best bet is keeping her out of the sun altogether), so we broke out her ridiculous sun hat and rash guard for quick dip. She seemed a bit shocked at first and was clearly holding on for deal life, but I have a feeling we’ve got a water baby on our hands. We spent lots of time outside this weekend, including a little Sunday evening stroll around the neighborhood with the Frenchie. Earlier in the day, Grace and I met up with our mom/baby friends and JP and then picked up Nick for our baptism prep class and some lunch in the Back Bay. There is more Black Mass filming being done in our neighborhood this week. On one hand, it’s rather exciting to have Johnny Depp walking around, but on the other, it was a pretty unnerving to see signs about forced busing at the old Southie High last night. Sure, the fresh paint on the street is part of a movie set, but the busing crisis was a real and critical time in the city and neighborhood’s history, one with powerful and lasting effects. On a lighter (only 100 calories and not the least bit depressing) note: I am going to eat 600 Yasso frozen Greek yogurt bars this summer. 2 down, 598 to go. I received a coupon for a free box a few weeks ago and highly recommend the sea salt caramel flavor (we’re already onto our second box), best enjoyed with your feet up on the deck. Oh, and save your popsicle sticks. I’ve got an easy DIY project coming up later this week. Nick and I had our first date night (5 months in the making!) since becoming parents. Mom on the loose! We were able to get last minute tickets to Amaluna and my sister and brother-in-law generously offered to babysit. It was really nice to get out for a bit, especially knowing Grace (and Clark) were in such good hands. The pictures my sister took of Zach and Grace together basically melted my heart. Uncle Z is the coolest. We were home before dark (and I nearly fell asleep during intermission — I need to step up my game if I want to convince Nick to go on a second post-baby date anytime soon), just in time to catch this beautiful sunset over the city. I already want this summer to last forever. Also On Tap for Today: After watching Tiny, I’ve become obsessed with the idea of moving into a tiny house… maybe, like… in 20 years If you have a lot of free time on your hands before the 4th, make these and impress your friends. 10 easy DIYs for the 4th via Buzzfeed (Red, white and blue jorts for everyone!) What was the highlight of your weekend?

GIVEAWAY CLOSED — Congratulations Kim, and many thanks to Wish Bone and all who entered. When we first brought Clark home, I had no idea what I was doing. He was my first non-hamster pet, and the first dog I wasn’t mostly terrified of. I probably should have read a book about dogs, or something… but instead our relationship was forged by a lot of trial and error, several panicked calls to the vet (they all started with “Is it normal for dogs to…”) and lots of Googling. And the fun stuff, like playing “Can you find me if I am hidden beneath all your half-destroyed stuffed animals?” When Clark didn’t eat right away, I would sit on the floor with him, garnishing his dry food with organic apple sauce, sliced carrots and shredded cheese, and attempt to feed him by hand. When he didn’t, like, do his business… I’d stay outside with him for hours, making up encouraging songs about bodily functions. I bought him a little toothbrush and meat flavored toothpaste (which smelled like a dead squirrel and made me want to cry) and tried my best to keep his K-9 canines nice and clean. He was more interested in eating the toothbrush. I thought he needed a bath before bed time each night (that was short lived, turns out that’s really not a good nor healthy idea), and wondered if there was some sort of Frenchie cuticle oil I should invest in. During those first few weeks, Nick would often come home to find dog toys strewn about our condo, and me and Clark covered in food, bathing supplies, and fur. Five years later, I’ve learned a few lessons (a monthly bath will suffice; if he’s hungry, he’ll eat), but I’ve yet to master the tooth brushing thing. When Milk-Bone offered to send me their new Brushing Chews, I thought…. finally. No more dead squirrel paste. Clark seems to think they’re treats, which works for me. Milk-Bone Brushing Chews have been clinically proven to reduce tartar build-up and freshen dog’s breath. They look like sweet little bones, but their brushing nubs and 75 degree twist were designed to reach down to the dog’s gum line, and those hard-to-reach back teeth. They’ve earned the Veterinary Oral Health Council’s seal of approval, and the highly sought after “two paws up” from Clark. The Frenchie is hooked, and I am happy to put away our little toothbrush. A giveaway from Milk-Bone The lovely folks at Milk-Bone have offered to give one On Tap for Today reader (US residents only, please… sorry, Canadians! And French people.) their own Milk-Bone Brushing Chews kit, along with a $25 VISA gift card. To enter, please comment below. While your dog is busy cleaning his own teeth, you might think about how you’ll put that gift card to good use, spoiling your fur ball. How to spoil your dog for $25 or less: Do a little research about dog-friendly locations in your area. I’m partial to the newly released Ruff Guide to the United States (pictured above)… and not just because Clark made his modeling debut in the Massachusetts section. One of the best ways I can think of to spoil your dog is to spend good ol’ fashioned quality time with him or her. C-A-R is one of Clark’s favorite words. He loves adventures, but more than anything, I think he just likes to be along for the ride. With summer approaching, we’re looking forward to a few dog-friendly weekends away. Treat your pal to a new collar or leash. A new collar or leash is an inexpensive but practical treat for your little guy. We have a great waterproof, stink-proof collar from Dublin Dog that is perfect for summer. Clark’s able to jump in the ocean (or the Swan Pond…) without getting his collar soggy. Speaking of swimming, you might invest in some water safety gear. Safety first, summer fun second. Pamper those paws. For less than $25, we can get Clark nice and clean (read: not smelling like Fritos… why does that happen?!) at our local groomer. We also love B.Y.O.D., a local dog spa and retail shop where we can drop Clark into one of their industrial sinks and bathe him ourselves. It’s a lot of fun… and a lot less messy than bathing him at home. You could also stock up on your pup’s favorite grooming supplies. We use Bag-Balm for Clark’s nose, oatmeal and aloe shampoo in the tub, a Zoom Groom for brushing (perfect for his short coat), and Musher’s Secret for paw protection in the winter. Make a contribution to your local dog park. Living in the city, we really appreciate having a safe, enclosed space to let Clark roam free and stretch his short legs a bit. We’re lucky to live close to the South Boston Bark Park, which is always really well maintained. I noticed the other day that you can become a member and support volunteer efforts to keep the park clean and safe. Seems like good way to ensure our little guy can continue to enjoy his trips to the park! Disclaimer: The Milk Bone dog products, information, and VISA gift cards (for this post and giveaway) have been provided by the Milk-Bone brand. I received a complimentary Brushing Chews kit and a $25 gift card. All opinions shared are my own (welp, and Clark’s… sort of), and I grateful to be sharing this giveaway with you and your pups. Also On Tap for Today: Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Healthy, fun recipes for the holiday from FitFluential Food safety: How to pack for a picnic from The Kitchn What’s your favorite way to spoil your dog? Share below for a chance to win your own Milk-Bone Brushing Chews and a $25 VISA giftcard. Entries will be accepted until the end of the day on Wednesday, May 28th. A random winner will be selected and notified by email.

And the fun stuff, like playing “Can you find me if I am hidden beneath all your half-destroyed stuffed animals?”

You get comfy, I’ll track down the meat flavored toothpaste.

When Clark didn’t eat right away, I would sit on the floor with him, garnishing his dry food with organic apple sauce, sliced carrots and shredded cheese, and attempt to feed him by hand.

I think he’s trying to show you his molars.

When Milk-Bone offered to send me their new Brushing Chews, I thought…. finally. No more dead squirrel paste. Clark seems to think they’re treats, which works for me.

Bonus points for the stand-up, resealable bag! #easilyimpressed

Just casually brushing his own chompers.

While your dog is busy cleaning his own teeth, you might think about how you’ll put that gift card to good use, spoiling your fur ball.

How to spoil your dog for $25 or less:

Do a little research about dog-friendly locations in your area.

What happened this weekend ended up on Instagram. Grace turned a month old and I turned 32. Nick crushed 14.1, Clark discovered heating blankets. Speaking of Clark (and Nick), a few people have asked how I switch back and forth between my Instagram account (@ElizabethEv) and Clark’s (@clarkthefrenchie). The answer: I don’t. Clark’s account (and his recent summer slim down plan…) is all my husband’s doing. They’re quite the pair. The weekend according to Instagram XXV I spent my birthday morning the best way possible: curled up with my little family. Naturally, Clark wasn’t far away. I love his squishy face and greying beard. He’s like a distinguished old gentleman (if you ignore all the farting). Nick put together a lovely dinner (takeout from my favorite Mexican restaurant, grown up things like candles and place mats, a perfectly portioned cake) while Grace napped (hallelujah). It’s been ages since we sat down together for a meal. It was wonderful. And so appreciated. I love wrapping paper. Maybe when I am old and retired, I can get a part-time job merchandizing wrapping paper at Homegoods. If you’re going to dream, dream big. I’m all for inspiring tea quotes, but the “warmth and love of my soul” has been no match for this frigid polar vortex nonsense. It was, like -100 in the midwest this weekend, so 18 in Boston probably seems balmy, but enough already. This lady needs some fresh air. My parents, sister and brother-in-law stopped by on Sunday after Mass with all kinds of treats (including a hundred CDs from my childhood bedroom… more on those gems later). These macaroons are incredible. I channeled my inner Donna Meagle and treated myself to a new electric kettle. I’ve been drinking quite a bit of tea lately, and have become paranoid about everything potentially unsafe. Like boiling water and open flames and stoves. I like that this kettle sits a safe distance from our counter ledge, promptly turns off when the water boils, and stays cool to the touch. Also: I like cute things. You’ve heard this story before: I’m attempting a full month of #fmsphotoaday. Saturday’s prompt was yellow. What’s the over/under on me making it past Tuesday? As I mentioned earlier, Clark recently discovered heating blankets. He’s nothing if not resourceful. Also On Tap for Today: 8 spring running events to look forward to in Boston Getting a jump on some spring cleaning 10 make-ahead breakfasts from The Kitchn What was the highlight of your weekend?

What a difference an extra weekend day makes. More fun, more food, more fresh air. Fewer number fives… apparently. The weekend according to Instagram XX Things start to feel really real when you go crib shopping. Trust me. After a surgical strike at Jordan’s Furniture (we were in and out in an hour, and five weeks from now we will have a crib, a dresser — which we will also use as a changing table — and a glider), we spent a bit of time walking around Babies R Us. Those little folks need a lot of stuff! I am so excited for her room to come together though. While I am not wishing away then next couple of months, I just can’t wait for our baby girl to arrive. After another long week (and yes, I did end up with a third nail in one of my tires…), I was tempted to skip Sunday’s workout and sleep in. A little encouragement from Nick and a fresh pair of Nanos from Reebok (thank you!) got me out the door, though. The WOD required a bit of creative scaling, but it felt good to get moving. I strict pressed 50 lbs., but I think my days of PRs will likely be on hold for a bit. I’m getting more and more comfortable doing my own thing, substituting and scaling when needed (crossfitmom.com is a great resource for pregnant CrossFitters), and focusing on the fact that doing something is better than doing nothing. Especially when it feels like I am wearing a weighted vest… all the time. I could make six different trips to the paint section at Home Depot and I imagine I’d leave with the exact same paint strips. Regardless of the intended room. We used chinchilla (Martha Stewart, surprised?) in our first condo, and I’m leaning towards the same color for the baby’s room. I love color. It’s like nail polish for your house. Can we discuss the fact that I missed number 5? To quote my husband re: pregnancy brain, “What will you forget to think of next?” This little snail keeps showing up on our front steps. I like his outfit. Running low on mascara (my personal nightmare), I ducked into Sephora… and accidentally bought one of everything. While reaching for a fresh tube of Diorshow Black Out, a pre-teen (or tween… or maybe she was an actual teen) complimented me on “my makeup taste.” She then followed me around the store and approved of everything that went into my basket. She made my day. I got to spend some quality time with my favorite blondes (my younger sister and our niece) this morning. We did baby yoga, hid in closets, sprinkled bagel crumbs everywhere, read a book about penguins, sang “head, shoulders, knees and toes,” put a human sweater on a baby doll, and made monster noises. I wish every day started that way. Back in Southie, Nick and I took advantage of the gorgeous weather and coaxed the Frenchie up a thousand stairs to enjoy the gorgeous view of the city from Dorchester Heights… …which explains why Clark has been asleep for approximately 50 hours. To make up for the lack of #5… a bonus instaphoto: I am excited and grateful to featured as today’s “Healthy Girl on the Go” thanks to Jenny and Nancy at Gold Standard Women. I love reading everything this mother-daughter duo shares about their inspiring health journey and loved spending time with them at this year’s Healthy Living Summit. I encourage you to check out their site!

We had quite the lovely weekend. We started with an exciting doctor’s appointment, followed with lots of time spent with family and friends, and ended with paying attention to football a nap on the sofa. The weekend according to Instagram XIX You likely already saw the news (mostly because I can’t keep anything good and exciting to myself), but Nick and I found out Friday afternoon that we are expecting a girl. And I am expecting her to have her father wrapped around her little finger. Clark is excited because (among other reasons) they’ll be able to share clothes. He loves ruffles. I found this little guy beneath our stoop early Saturday, just as the rain was clearing. I like when nature visits the city. And isn’t that shell gorgeous? I whipped up two batches of this easy, football-friendly black bean dip this weekend. You can find the vegan, gluten-free recipe (along with a tour of our new kitchen) here. (And thank you, Emily, for catching the #2 pun…) We spent Friday night laughing, eating, and more laughing with friends. Our new place is really feeling like home, especially with friends and family there to share the space. Matt and Pam brought us this cheery pink begonia plant. I have a feeling there’s going to be more and more pink coming our way. I don’t know if I should tell you this or not… so naturally, I am going to tell you. Clark got peed on by another dog this weekend. He was standing on one side of a chain link fence, and the perp was on the other, attempting to mark the fence post (presumably). Instead, he decorated my dog (who seemed oddly oblivious to the whole thing). Next stop: the longest, most thorough bath of Clark’s life. We enjoyed this gorgeous view of the city from my sister and brother-in-law’s new apartment on Saturday night. I love having our family just minutes away. The next day, we had dinner with my brother, sister-in-law and niece. We’re spoiled. Who ever said you don’t win friends with salad has never eaten salad with me. I love making a big salad to enjoy on Sunday night, with enough to pack for lunch on Monday. Because I am both lazy and a forward thinker. It wouldn’t be the end of the weekend without a polish change. I went from dark (essie no more film) to light (essie pilates hottie). Meanwhile, at the other end of the sofa, Clark was down for the count. That’s what a weekend of fun with do to a Frenchie.

The theme of this weekend was finding peace in the routine. And feeling as grateful as ever. The weekend according to Instagram X Words fail to describe Friday in Boston and neighboring cities and towns. I am proud of our leadership, our law enforcement, and our fellow citizens. And I never, ever want to see another day like that. At a loss for words, I offered a hand to hold. With the “shelter in place” order lifted, one suspect dead and another in custody, it felt important to get out of our condo and try to restore some semblance of normalcy. Our box, CrossFit Southie, was hosting a special Marathon Monday workout and fundraiser for the Richard family. The WOD (with a rep scheme of 4-15-13 followed by a half mile sprint) was sent to boxes across the country. Feeling flat out exhausted, I choked up multiple times during the workout, just trying to wrap by head around the week. We are just so lucky to be safe and sound. The three of us headed out for some fresh, ocean air. I love this little fishing boat (it’s named Success), and living so close to the water. Clark and I went straight for the shoreline, and he took his first dip of the season. A good workout, some fresh air… and some sparkle. I wore these flats on my wedding day, and love breaking them out on a regular ol’ Saturday. After a week of waffling between emotional eating giant bowls of popcorn and forgetting to eat altogether, we showed up for a verrrrrrrry early dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Franklin Cafe, before they even had a chance to unlock their door. I felt like one of those people who shows up for door buster sales. Or a very elderly person. I would have been embarrassed but I was too hungry for that. If you’re wondering who the biggest goofball on the planet is, look no further. How did I possibly manage to hit myself in the head with a loaded barbell on Sunday morning and still get a 10 lb PR on the snatch? Sometimes I think I should be monitored by scientists, or something. After CrossFit (and a shower, obvi), I scooped up the Frenchie and headed to the hospital for pet therapy. Clark cannot get into the car fast enough once he has that vest on. We spent a little over an hour hanging out with the kids and when we left, my heart and head felt a million pounds lighter. Clark, on the other hand, felt six pounds heavier. He can’t say no to treats. We rounded out the weekend with a beautiful Mass at St. Cecilia. As we listened to Fr. Unni’s sermon, I knew that I was hearing what I needed to hear. We need to be gentle with ourselves, and with one another. There will always be more light than darkness. Also On Tap for Today: Maybe we won’t lose tonight’s soccer game 99-0… maybe? Taking Heather’s cue and sending some snail mail This made me laugh πŸ™‚ What are you looking forward to this week?

Also On Tap for Today:

Maybe we won’t lose tonight’s soccer game 99-0… maybe?

Everyone’s favorite Frenchie turns four today. That makes him 28 in human years. It’s high time he got a job and considered moving out. Just kidding. I wouldn’t mind if he learned how to drive and could swing by the office with some piping hot Nespresso every now and then, though. We’ve had some good times over the past three-ish years since bringing Clark home. This past year has been especially great, given our therapy visits to the hospital and local schools. I love being able to share him with such awesome kids. Just this week, I got to watch Clark curl up on a rug in one of the classrooms at Franciscan Hospital for Children while one of the kids practiced reading to him. My heart got all mushy. It was similarly mushy a few weeks ago when a package of hand drawn cards arrived in the mail from a group of kids we visited earlier this year. I will post the rest on Clark’s very own Facebook page later today. That’s right. I am officially a creep and created a Facebook page for my dog. Judge freely. In celebration of Clark’s fourth birthday, here are a few Frenchie “fours.” Clark’s four favorite foods: Cheese Carrots Cucumbers Boiled chicken (which, by the way, smells like a dead body… a dead chicken body, I suppose) Four things an animal communicator (yes, I brought him to a pet psychic) told us about Clark: He loves Christmas (who doesn’t?) He likes Taylor Swift and wishes we would leave the radio on for him while we’re at work Nick is his favorite He wants a turtle, a hermit crab, a rabbit or a baby (at least he’s not picky) The four things kids always ask us at pet therapy: Where is his tail? Does he have any puppies? Does he snore? When is he coming back? Four things we call him (besides his real name): Min (short for Mini, which is short for Mini Vegas, which… nevermind) Little muffin (see below) o meu menino (Portuguese for “my boy”) French fry A couple of years ago, I was walking Clark in Southie when a bus driver opened his window and started yelling, “Muffins! Hey! Muffins!” I thought either I was being sexually harassed or that the man was operating some sort of mobile MBTA bakery… until I realized he was calling out to Clark. He asked how “little muffins” was doing, and I was like, “Um… his name his Clark.” “I know,” he replied, “but my nickname for him is Mr. Muffins.” Well, alright. I immediately told Nick about this, as we often wonder what sort of nonsense Clark gets into with his best friend and dog walker while we’re at work. I am not sure if Nick totally believed the muffins story. Months and months passed and finally that same bus driver pulled up while the three of us were out walking. The door opened, and Nick got to hear “Muffins!” for himself. It was awesome. Life is never boring with Clark. Happy birthday, little muffin. Also On Tap for Today: Happy Birthday to my older brother, too πŸ™‚ Thanks to Alex, Stephanie and Michelle for sharing this amazing set of photos Blasting T-Swift for Clark while I am at the office Do you give your pet weird nicknames?

I am fairly certain Target’s bullseye logo has hypnotic powers. It’s impossible to enter and exit that store having purchased only the Neosporin, Chobani, C2 sports bras (love those) and mouthwash you intended to buy. Target is where thoughtful shopping lists go to die, and where impulse shopping takes flight. I am tempted to start an in-store support group for people like me. It needs to meet as far from the office supply aisle as possible, though. I am sucker for cute binder clips. Or really, anything cute. I recently learned that Target is headquartered in Minneapolis. When I head to the Twin Cities for HLS in September, I intend to knock on Target’s front door and demand answers to such questions as “How do you make everything so cute?” and “Really, tell the truth. Did you hypnotize me with your concentric red circles?” and “Can I have some coupons?” I will report back, I promise. I am nothing if not a lady of the Target shopping people. A few recent favorite Target finds* *none of which were on my list when I entered the store, and yes, I still participate in the charade of writing a list before going to Target 3 piece notebook set, $9.99 I found this adorable set of unlined notebooks near the garden section. I love to doodle and sketch when I need to unwind, and these pages are thick enough that my drawings of majestic French bulldogs don’t bleed through. They’re packaged perfectly for a gift. Ceramic French bulldog bank I have a problem when it comes to Frenchie things. You know this. You also now know where my fortune is hidden. Memorex patterned CDs and DVDs, $6.99 I’ve been on a quest to organize and back-up six years of photos. Having somewhere nice-looking to put them helps. Short paper straws I like my fresh juice thick (bordering on chewy, sorry if that offends) and the usual straws often can’t handle my kale. I found these short and stout straws in the Valentine’s Day section a few months ago. Target knows how to do the holidays. Seasonal items (which immediately go on sale after the holiday) like these paper goods can often be carried over for showers and parties. up & up binder clips I use these for keeping cords coiled (and not a tangled mess), bags closed, pages marked, etc. As I mentioned before, the office supply area is a danger zone for my debit card. Graphic wrapping paper Yes, I stocked up on the Frenchie print. I love wrapping gifts almost as much as I like giving them. (Cape Cod) Map print scarf, $14.99 The colors of this scarf were what first caught my attention. And then I saw that the nautical pattern was, in fact, a map of the Cape (my True North, even though it’s technically south east of Boston). It pairs great with a white teeshirt and jeans. And boat shoes. For the record: This is not a sponsored post. Target is not aware that I exist. (As far as I know.) They do know the way to my heart wallet, however. Also On Tap for Today: Fellow Target-obessed friends will love their Tumblr Doing my Sunday things on Saturday Playing in the snow with Clark Which store has you under their spell?
