Today: Into the box.
[tweetmeme source=”elizabethev” only_single=false]I pride myself on thinking outside the box: creative solutions to work challenges, weird hair accessories that should be misses but turn out to be hits, excuses for testing the outer limits of the… um… speed limit. Being in the box, though? That’s somewhere I’ve wanted to be for a while, but was frankly too scared to show up.
After experiencing my first Crossfit workout at Reebok Crossfit ONE in May, and spectating at the Crossfit Regionals (also at Reebok Headquarters) a few weeks later, I’ve wanted to take my first class at my neighborhood box. Heck, I’ve wanted to go since Nick became a member there last October. Finally, this past weekend, I got up the nerve to take the intro class.
It was tough. I was intimidated. My arms shook as I held the barbell above my head. I was blinded by my own sweat at one point.
Despite all the fear that kept me from taking the intro class sooner, I finished the workout on two feet, with a smile on my face. Will I go back for more? Most definitely. Do I wish I had walked into the box sooner? Maybe. With the busiest time of the year at work behind me, and the distinct feeling that it’s time for a new adventure (I promised myself no marathon this year) on my mind, it seems like there is no better time than the present to commit to something new. Something that scares and challenges me.
Everything Nick told me on our way to Crossfit Southie– that I’d get my ass kicked, that I’d get over the nervousness once I got in the door, that I’d be looking forward to the next workout– proved to be true. While thinking outside the box can be a good thing, sometimes it’s even better to stop thinking and just show up.
Also On Tap for Today:
- Love this: the benefits of making your bed
- Long walk with Clark 🙂
- Time for some mid-year resolutions (thanks, EJR!)
What’s something new that you’re going to do?

I just met Chris Harris from Crossfit Southie today. I was introduced to crossfit when I was in Iraq – very popular among military guys. Have you gone back since? Today, I am visiting the VFW on Ellery St for their horseshoe tournament! I’ll show those old dudes what’s up. 😉
