Friday in the city

We made what will likely be our only trip home to Boston this summer, and while it was a short visit, it was a lovely Friday in the city.  The kids had a special event at their school (a visit from Barn Babies), and I took advantage of some solo time (v necessary after Wednesday’s happenings) to get some errands done and work accomplished.

9:00 AM Car wash // Because, as Grace noted, “it’s pretty embarrassing to have bird poop on your car.”  Both kids love the car wash.  And I love a poop-free ride.

9:30 AM Drop off at school // Our children’s program is year-round, but we take them out for July + August, and as much as we are living the dream on the Cape, I know they miss seeing their friends and teachers.  I love that we have the option of booking a day here or there if we need it.

10:00 AM City Hall // We recently bought a new car, and I needed to pop into City Hall to grab my new resident parking sticker.  If you’re making a trip into Boston, I highly recommend the Parcel 7 parking lot.  It cost me $6 for an hour or so– just enough time to grab my permit and take a stroll through Boston Public Market (which is situated below the garage).

11:00 AM Target for, um, just the essentials // There is no Target on the Cape, which is kind of a blessing for my bank account.  And a curse for my hair (so hooked on the Kristin Ess mask).

In addition to Pull-Ups and swim diapers for Nicky, I bought a potty seat for the Cape… because I think he’s nearly ready for potty training in earnest.  I’m not.  But that doesn’t really matter.  I also stocked up on my favorite Olly vitamins (the sleep + stress versions… because I need more of the former and less of the latter…) and hair mask, which I use as my regular conditioner.  I grabbed a new PH5 striped band for my fitbit, two giant sand shovels, some really pretty highlighters (I’m a sucker for back to school and pretending to be organized), and a few tracing pouches + flashcard sets from the black hole formerly known as the dollar spot.

Oh, and Diet Coke, because that’s one of my favorite hobbies and passions in life and please don’t tell me how it’s going to kill me.

whole foods essential oils

12:00 Grocery shopping // I needed two specific items (jojoba oil + vitamin e oil) for a few diy projects I wanted to get done, and also… I just really like grocery shopping at home.  By myself.  I grabbed some heirloom tomatoes, basil + fresh mozzarella for lunch and a bunch of plums + peaches for the kids (they can’t get enough).

1-3:30 PM Lunch at home + chatting with the neighbors + catching up on work // I planned to go for a run, but needed to wait out the wild rain + thunderstorm, so I snuck in a few episodes of My Favorite Murder  (can’t listen when the kids are around) while sending invoices, folding laundry, packing up random stuff to bring to the Cape (a diffuser, some stainless steel straws, several sports bras, two cookbooks) and cool stuff like that.

castle island

3:30-4:00 PM Run at Castle Island // It was hot as blazes, but I couldn’t be home without making a trip out to the island.  I ran the loop around the island and the Sugar Bowl before heading home to shower and try to make myself stop sweating before picking up the kids (didn’t work, but hey).

4:45-ish Pick up Nick at his office + head over to school // …for CUTENESS OVERLOAD. The kids loved holding all kinds of baby animals, and I loved watching them hold all kinds of baby animals.

Speaking of… these ridiculous posts from 2011/12 are still some of my most viewed after all these years:

5:30 Dinner in Southie with two very tired little people // Pizza + fruit from this mother of the century.

7:30-ish Back to the Cape after baths + pjs // There was very little traffic by 7:30, so we hit the road and I fully expected both kids to be sound asleep before we even hit the highway.  50/50.. Grace was quickly asleep, but Nicky was awake and verrrry chatty for the entire ride down (it takes us about 1:20 to get from Southie to Harwich without traffic).

See you on the flip side of Labor Day, Boston.

Also On Tap for Today:

  • Puppet show at the library (what is my life…)
  • Starting a new book (aka six new books, because I’m a much more efficient reader if I’m hopping around a bit)
  • Great recommended reading from Becoming Minimalist
