February 2018 | Currently

Michelle Obama recently shared a Valentine’s Day Spotify playlist dedicated to President Obama (it’s so good!), and since she is my queen, I figured it was time to follow suit and share what I’ve been listening to (and reading, and feeling, and eating, and whatev).  I semi-forgot, semi-was too lazy to share a Currently post for January… so maybe this one will be extra great.  Probably not.  I’m all about elevating expectations and immediately, like, deflating them.

Here’s what’s On Tap for February.

FEBRUARY 2018 | CURRENTLY

CURRENTLY READING

  • Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History with Grace.  She is really into “chapter books” lately, and I love that we are able to learn more about one amazing woman each day.  I think this will be in heavy bedtime rotation for a long time.
  • This low FODMAPs cookbook — my stomach has been a real PITA lately, so I’m revisiting and learning more about this option (you can read about my first go ’round with FODMAPs here and here).  It’s been a few years, but I’ve found the cookbook to be a great, updated resource.  I’m also returning to the primary care physician and RD that I used to see, which I am weirdly excited about.
  • Various old timey documents pertaining to my family’s ancestry.  My sister gave me an Ancestry DNA kit for Christmas — it was such a cool gift.  If you’re interested in trying it yourself, you can save $10 by using my referral link.  While waiting for my results, I spent some time updating my family tree and (this is sort of crazy) connected with a distant cousin… who lives just a few blocks away.  The world is huge and messy, but it’s also really small and tidy and amazing.  Sort of like 1880’s penmanship.
  • I was just about to check what’s loaded on my Kindle… but that’s sort of a clear indicator that I haven’t been reading real books this month… so, let’s not.

CURRENTLY FEELING

  • Hyper aware of my iPhone addiction (and like, the world’s).  I accidentally left my phone on the kitchen counter this morning, and felt like I was missing a limb.  But even prior to that, I’ve worried about how much time I spend scrolling (and simultaneously missing out on who knows what).  I’ve been making an effort to leave my phone on the charger at night for a few hours before bed, which is a start.  I’ve also been driving without relying on Waze when I can (i.e. when I’m not worried about being late or getting lost), which is oddly refreshing.  Like, we can trust and rely on ourselves.  We don’t need our phone to make all our decisions.
  • That it’s perfectly New England to go from a beach day on a Wednesday (72 degrees and all) to snow on a Thursday.
  • Like I am nearing crazy plant lady status.  And I couldn’t be more proud.
  • Really excited about a few projects + partnerships.  Working hard + being a decent person pays off, kids.  Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

CURRENTLY WATCHING

  • The Olympics.  I’m 900% obsessed and stayed up 900% too late the last few nights, having become emotionally invested in couples ice dancing, regular skiing, and that skiing with weapons thing.  As one does every four years.
  • …but as soon as the Olympics are over, we’ll be catching up on the new season of Homeland so that I can have crazy dreams about being a secret operative under attack.
  • Nicky and Grace sharing and it melts my cold little heart.

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO

  • MUSIC:
    • The Weepies (always The Weepies), The Sundays, The Veronicas (the theme is… The) and the aforementioned Michelle Obama playlist.  Also, I have “Dripping in Finesse” in my head mostly constantly.
  • PODCASTS:
    • Keep It: Smart + often hilarious commentary on current events, pop culture, media
    • Someone Knows Something, Season 4: This season covers the unsolved murder of Wayne Greavette  and is riveting, per usual.  Also I think David Ridgen is a genius.  Unlike last season, which was released all at once, this season’s episodes are being released weekly (on Mondays), which adds to the suspense of it all.
    • Slow Burn: Because I know almost nothing about Watergate.  And yet, it seems like a fairly stable time all things considered.  Yikes.
    • Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations:  I sort of stumbled across this podcast a few months ago and have been catching up on past episodes, including interviews with RuPaul Charles,  Vice President Joe Biden, Marie Forleo, Gabrielle Bernstein, Mastin Kipp, and Sister Joan Chittister.

Time to go chat with my plant children (they don’t sass me, nor do they dump entire bowls of Cheerios on the dog).

Also On Tap for Today:

If you could compete in any Olympic event, what would it be?

I LOVE THE WEEPIES. I saw them live several years back and they were phenomenal. Thanks for the podcast recs. I was already listening to Super Soul (well, as of a week ago), but just added the rest. Despite the fact that I already subscribe to more podcasts than I could ever possibly listen.
