Today: Things, Kitchen Edition.
March’s volume of Martha Stewart Living appeared in my mailbox a week or two ago. That’s always a good thing. Is that really my best Martha pun? I need to get a life. Or, for your sake, a past time that does not involve broadcasting the inner workings of my pea brain on the internet. In the meantime, I started this post, so I may as well finish it.
Martha has her good things, Oprah has her favorite things, Ariel had gadgets and gizmos of plenty and whozits and whatzits galore. I just have plain old things. In my humble opinion, they’re good. And they’re my favorites. I give you, Things: the Kitchen Edition.
My cookbook collection: A work in progress, but treasured nonetheless. My favorites are Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone (a gift from my older brother; must share the chili recipe one of these days) and the vintage cookbook I swiped from my grandmother. I could stare at the pictures in the Everyday Food and Real Simple ones for hours. Almost everything I’ve taught myself about cooking meat (without eating it) has come from The New Basics (the rest has come from experimenting on Nick and other unsuspecting, but hungry, individuals).
The green lady bug timer: from my aunt Jeanne. Since I still can’t figure out how to work the timer on our oven, this gadget was a most welcomed addition to the kitch-in. And it’s cute to boot… and hiding next to Michael Pollan.
Measure Up Bowls: These cute bowls are discretely marked for measuring, taking the guesswork out of portion sizing. My days of over-serving myself Cheese Doodles might be over.
Bodum Tea Press: Perfect for brewing a cup or two of tea, either loose leaf or bagged. In warmer weather, I use this on the reg for brewing iced tea. [Photo source.]
Buddha(s) and his friend, Buddha tea cup: I love these guys. My older brother brought me a teak Buddha from Thailand. He used to visit with these two, until my former intern accidentally snapped his head off. Talk about awkward. And then talk about no longer being employed. (Just kidding about the last part, honest.)
And last, but not least, my Kitchen Aid Hand Mixer, a Christmas pressie from Nick. Who knew you could make cake without catching carpel tunnel? This thing is magical, and takes up very little room. [Photo source.]
Welp, there you have it. Stay tuned for future editions of Things. That’s both a promise aaaand a threat.
Also On Tap for Today:
- Keeping an eye on the news: Massive quake hits Chile, Pacific under tsunami threat (via CNN)
- Order my Red Sox v. Yankees tickets 🙂
- Go to Nick’s hockey game and possibly make a trip to Legacy Place
What are your favorite kitchen things?

Do you ever watch America’s Test Kitchen? My hubby is obsessed and it’s a great show. And they have some fabulous cookbooks to boot!
Love the portion control bowls! May get some myself. Thanks for sharing!

beautifully done blog.
i’m ok in the kitchen, but i have no great love for it. so i admire you and your bowls and mixers and buddha baby keeping an eye on everything for you. i think maybe i don’t like kitchen things all that much because when i was in jr high school they separated the boys and the girls … the girls in home ec and the boys in industrial arts. every once in a while there was a girl that couldn’t hack it in home ec and she’d go with the boys to industrial arts and learn to make a lamp out of a coca cola can. those were ususally the girls that smoked in the bathroom in-between periods. anyway, we had various units centering on cooking; home design; etc. i think because it was forced on me that somehow i don’t appreciate it, though i do appreciate the artful way a nice restaurant can put the food on a plate. i just don’t want to be the one putting it on the plate, you know?
but anyway, your blog was lovely, and the pictures of all the kitchen utensils make me realize that this cooking thing, though lost on me personally, is an art all its own.
thanks for sharing!
